Tamil Nadu Festival Photo Calendar 2026-27: What to Prepare When
A month-by-month plan for Navaratri, Deepavali, Karthigai Deepam, Pongal, Thaipusam and Puthandu, with outfits, props, backdrops, prompt ideas and how early to start.
Festivals in Tamil Nadu arrive quickly, and good photos need a little planning. This guide gives you a month-by-month list for late 2026 and 2027, so you know what outfits, props and backdrops to arrange, and when to start. By the end you will have your own simple plan for the season.
A note on dates
The dates below are the ones commonly given for 2026 and 2027. Panchangam dates can differ by a day depending on the almanac and the place. Please confirm with a Tamil calendar or your temple before you fix any plan.
October 2026: Navaratri and Golu (11 to 19 October)
Navaratri runs for nine nights. Many homes set up a Golu, a display of dolls on steps. Start planning about three weeks earlier.
- Outfits: a silk saree or pavadai for each day, in the colour you like.
- Props: Golu steps, lamps, flowers, a kalash, sundal in small bowls.
- Backdrop: a clean wall near the Golu with warm light, not a harsh tube light.
Make a festive photo of me standing beside a Golu display with lamps and flowers, in a silk saree. Keep my face, skin tone, hairstyle and features exactly as in the photo. Warm evening light, natural look.
November 2026: Deepavali (8 November) and Karthigai Deepam (24 November)
Deepavali is on 8 November. Start choosing new clothes and rangoli ideas by the middle of October. Take your real family photo early in the morning in daylight, before the crowd and crackers begin. You can ask AI later to add soft lamp glow to that real photo.
Karthigai Deepam on 24 November is all about rows of lamps. Ready the agal lamps, oil, wicks and a few banana leaves a week before. Evening photos with lamps are lovely, but safety comes first: keep children and loose clothes away from flames.
Add a gentle glow of clay lamps along the doorstep and a rangoli in the foreground. Keep my face, skin tone, hairstyle and features exactly as in the photo. Do not change the clothes. Calm, warm evening mood.
More festival ideas are in festival prompts.
December 2026: a quiet month to prepare
Use December to get ready for Pongal. Shop for sugarcane, a new pot, kolam powder and cotton clothes. If you want to show an old family photo at Pongal, December is a good time to clean it up. Our guide on restoring old family photos explains how.
January 2027: Pongal and Thaipusam
Thai Pongal is on 15 January 2027. The days around it are:
- 14 January: Bhogi, clearing the old and tidying the home.
- 15 January: Thai Pongal, the pot boiling over in the courtyard.
- 16 January: Mattu Pongal, thanking the cattle.
- 17 January: Kaanum Pongal, visiting relatives and picnics.
Thaipusam follows on 22 January 2027. Plan simple devotional photos with yellow or saffron clothes, and respect the temple's rules about photography.
Pick your outfits by the first week of January. Veshti and shirt, or a cotton saree, look best in morning sun. For the backdrop, a courtyard, a kolam and sugarcane stalks are enough. See our Pongal photo guide for wording.
April 2027: Tamil New Year (14 April)
Puthandu falls on 14 April 2027. It is a day of mango, neem and jaggery, with a special tray of fruits, flowers and gold in many homes. Plan a bright, fresh photo with a mango leaf thoran on the door and new clothes. Start about ten days earlier. April is hot, so the best photo time is before 9 in the morning.
How early to prepare
- Three weeks before: choose outfits and check with the tailor.
- Two weeks before: collect props and clean the backdrop wall.
- One week before: take a few trial photos in the same light you will use.
- On the day: take real photos first. Do AI edits later, calmly.
Using AI wisely for festivals
A real photo with good light is the best starting point. AI works as a helper to add a lamp glow, tidy a background or try a different look. Always keep a copy of the untouched photo. If you run a shop, your festival posts can also be made from these photos, and our small business poster guide shows how. Business ideas are collected in business prompts.
Quick checklist
- Confirm dates with a Tamil calendar.
- Choose outfits three weeks early.
- Arrange lamps, flowers and a clean backdrop.
- Take real photos in good daylight first.
- Edit a copy, never the original.
- Ask family before sharing group photos.
Common questions
Why does my calendar show a different date?
Different almanacs count the star and moon timing slightly differently, so a one-day gap is possible. Follow your family or temple tradition.
Which festival is easiest for a first try?
Pongal is easy. The courtyard, kolam and daylight need little setup, and the outfits are simple.
Can I make prompts for any festival?
Yes. Open the builder, describe the outfit, props and light, and add the line that keeps your face the same.
Please use only your own photos, or photos whose owners have clearly agreed. Results vary from app to app and from day to day, so treat every output as a draft you check yourself.
