How to Make Pongal and Festival Photos with AI
Elements, sample prompts and tips for creating Pongal and Diwali greeting images with AI.
On festival days we love to send greeting images to family and friends on WhatsApp. With AI tools you can now create your own personal festival pictures in minutes. Here are the steps.
1. Name the festival's symbols
If you only say "Pongal picture", the tool gives you something generic. Name the things that belong to the festival:
- Pongal: milk boiling over in a clay pot, sugarcane, turmeric plants, kolam, banana leaf, farmers, cattle.
- Diwali: clay diyas, colourful rangoli, sparklers, a sweets platter, new clothes.
- Karthigai Deepam: rows of lamps, an evening sky.
2. Mention colours and light
A soft golden morning light suits Pongal ("warm morning sunlight"). For Diwali, glowing lamps against a dark background ("glowing diyas at dusk") look special.
3. Sample prompts
Pongal greeting: A festive Pongal greeting illustration, a clay pot overflowing with milk, sugarcane stalks, turmeric plants, colourful kolam, warm morning sunlight, traditional South Indian style, vibrant colours, space at the top for text.
Diwali greeting: A Diwali greeting image with rows of glowing clay diyas, a rangoli with marigold petals, soft bokeh lights in the background, rich warm colours, elegant and festive.
The phrase "space at the top for text" matters. It leaves room for your greeting words on the picture.
4. With your family photo
Upload your family photo and ask: "Keep the faces of these people exactly the same, change the background to a Pongal courtyard and the clothes to traditional wear." Use photos of family members only with their consent.
5. Adding the greeting text
AI tools often make mistakes when drawing Tamil letters. After the image is ready, the reliable way is to type "பொங்கல் நல்வாழ்த்துகள்" yourself in an app like Canva.
6. Before you share
- Check for strange hands, extra fingers or odd shapes.
- A vertical size works best for WhatsApp Status; add "vertical 9:16" to the prompt.
- Check that traditional details such as the kolam and flowers look right.
You can find ready festival prompts in our Festival category.

Frequently asked questions
The kolam does not look right. What can I do? Describe it in detail: "simple symmetrical kolam with white rice flour dots and lines". If it is still off, generate again.
Can I use these for business? Each tool has its own terms of use. Read the tool's rules before using images commercially.
