Privacy Policy

Your privacy matters to us. This page explains in plain words what Chater collects and why, what it does not collect, when third-party tools load, and the choices and rights you have. It follows the principles of India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023. Last updated: 4 Oct 2026.

Who we are

Chater (https://chater.in) is a free website of AI image prompts for Tamil and English readers in India. It is created and run by its owner, who decides how and why any personal data is processed, and is therefore the data fiduciary under Indian law. Contact: hello@chater.in.

What we do not collect

  • We do not ask for your name, email or phone number. There are no visitor accounts and no login.
  • We never receive or store your photos. There is no photo upload on this site; it only offers text prompts.
  • We do not sell personal data.

What we collect and why

We collect only what is needed for the purposes below and do not use it for anything else.

  • Anonymous counters (first-party): how many times a prompt or guide was viewed and a prompt was copied. Purpose: to show which prompts are popular and to improve the site. These counters are not linked to you, so they work whether or not you accept cookies.
  • Language and preferences: your language, favourites, theme and font size, kept on your own device. Purpose: to make the site work the way you chose.
  • Technical data: when you use the site, our server may briefly handle your IP address and browser type, for example in a short-lived counter that limits abuse of the copy and search features (kept for hours, not days) and in the web server log kept for a limited time for security and fixing errors.
  • Analytics and advertising data (third parties, only after you accept): described below. Purpose: to understand how the site is used and to pay for it with ads.
  • If you write to us: your email and message, used only to reply and to resolve your request.
  • If you buy from the shop: payment is made on an external provider's page. We do not receive your card, bank or UPI details. The provider may share your name, email and order details with us so we can deliver the product.

Cookies and browser storage

These are the cookies and storage items the site itself sets:

  • lang (cookie, one year): remembers your language.
  • chater_pub (session cookie): created the first time you copy a prompt. It only stops repeated taps being counted many times, and it is deleted when you close the browser.
  • chater_consent (cookie, 12 months if you accepted, 6 months if you rejected) and chater_consent_meta (browser storage): your cookie choice, the time you made it and the version of the consent banner.
  • chater_ann (cookie, 30 days): set only if you close the announcement bar.
  • Browser storage on your device: favs2 (favourites), recent (recently viewed prompts), theme, fs (font size), chater_pwa_dismissed, chater_pwa_installed and chater_visits (the install-app suggestion), and chater_visit_counted (this visit, cleared when you close the tab). Our server does not read these. Clearing your browser data removes them.
  • If you install the site as an app, pages you opened may be kept in your device cache for offline use.
  • A separate login cookie exists only for the site administrator. Visitors never receive it.

Third-party tools and when they load

Chater can use Google Analytics 4 (a measurement ID is set on this site), Google Tag Manager, Plausible, Microsoft Clarity, Meta Pixel and Google AdSense, and the owner may add other tags. Which ones run depends on the site settings.

  • None of them is requested before you choose. When you first visit, a banner asks you to Accept or Reject. They load only after you tap Accept.
  • If you tap Reject, or ignore the banner, nothing from these tools is loaded and no data is sent to them.
  • After you accept, these companies may set their own cookies (for example _ga from Google Analytics) and receive your IP address, device and browser details and the pages you visit. Their own privacy policies apply.
  • Our fonts are hosted on our own server, so no font request goes to an outside company.

Advertising (Google AdSense)

If advertising is switched on, Google AdSense shows ads only after you accept. Google and its partners may use cookies to show ads, which can be personalised. You can control personalised ads at Google Ads Settings (adssettings.google.com). If you reject cookies, no AdSense script runs on our pages.

Our legal basis: your consent

We use analytics and advertising tools only with your consent. You can withdraw it at any time with the "Cookie settings" link in the footer (choose Reject); withdrawing does not affect anything done before. Anonymous counters and the cookies and storage needed to run the site do not identify you and are not based on consent.

How long we keep data

Anonymous counters last as long as the prompt or guide exists. Abuse-control counters are deleted within hours. Web server logs are kept only as long as needed for security. Your consent record lasts as described above. Emails you send us are kept while we deal with your request and for a reasonable time after. Data held by Google and other tool providers follows their own policies.

Children

This site is for a general audience and is not directed at children under 18. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children, we do not track children, and we do not intend to show targeted or personalised advertising to anyone under 18. We cannot check anyone's age, so if you are under 18 please use the site with a parent or guardian, and reject cookies. If you believe a child has given us personal data, write to us and we will delete it. Please think carefully before uploading any child's photo to an AI tool.

Your rights and how to use them

You have the right to ask us for a summary of the personal data we hold about you, to correct it, to erase it, to have your complaints heard and answered (grievance redressal), and to nominate another person to exercise these rights if you cannot. Because we have no accounts, tell us what you want to know about and how we can recognise it (for example the email you wrote from). Write to hello@chater.in. We reply within 24 hours to acknowledge and aim to resolve within 15 days. See the Grievance and Takedown page. If we do not resolve your complaint, you may complain to the Data Protection Board of India once it is in operation.

Security

We use reasonable safeguards: the site is served over HTTPS, the admin area is password protected, and we keep the data we hold to a minimum. No system is completely secure. If a breach affects personal data, we will act as the law requires.

Processing outside India

Google, Microsoft, Meta and other tool providers may process data on servers outside India after you accept their tools. Our own server location is described by our hosting provider.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, we will update this page and the "Last updated" date. If we start using a new tool, we will ask for your consent again.
