Using AI Photo Prompts Safely: Privacy and Consent
Own photos only, consent from others, avoiding fakes and deepfakes, and privacy settings: a guide to using AI photo tools responsibly.
Changing photos with AI is fun, but it also comes with responsibilities. Follow these simple rules to protect yourself and others.
1. Use only your own photos
Edit only your own face or photos that belong to you. Do not take someone else's picture from the internet and use it.
2. Get consent from others
If you want to edit a photo of a family member, friend or colleague, ask them first. Parents in particular should think carefully before uploading children's photos to any AI tool.
3. Celebrities and deepfakes
Putting the face of an actor, politician or any public figure on another body (a face swap) is misuse. It can deceive people, damage reputations and, in some places, be a crime. Chater does not publish prompts like this.
4. Fakes that look real
- Do not share an AI image as if it were a real photograph.
- Do not create fake ID cards or certificates.
- Do not create or spread fake images that look like news.
If your picture was made by AI, saying "made with AI" is the honest thing to do.
5. Check privacy settings
- Look in the settings of the tool to see whether your pictures are used to train its models. Many tools let you switch this off.
- Do not upload images that show ID cards, bank details or your home address.
- Delete pictures and chats you no longer need.
6. Unknown apps
Do not upload your photos to unknown apps that advertise "change your face free in one tap". Use trusted apps from official stores and reliable companies.
7. Before you share
Ask yourself: could this hurt someone? Could it mislead someone? Would the person in it be happy with it? If any answer is no, do not share it.
On Chater we never upload or store your photos; we only provide text prompts. To learn more, see our Privacy page.
A short safety list
- Only your own photos, or photos with permission.
- Do not alter the faces of celebrities.
- Do not pass off an AI image as real.
- Do not upload pictures of important documents.
- Use only trusted apps.
If you find misuse
If your picture has been altered by AI without your permission, report the post on the social media platform where you found it. Save screenshots as evidence. In serious cases in India, you can report at the official site cybercrime.gov.in or call the helpline 1930.
