How to Write a Good AI Image Prompt
Write in a simple order of subject, place, clothing, light and style, and your AI images improve fast.
Many people have had the experience of imagining one picture and getting another from an AI tool. Most of the time the reason is that the prompt did not have enough detail. In this guide you will learn a simple structure that works in almost any tool.
Write in five steps
- Subject: who or what is the main thing? "A young woman", "a tea stall".
- Look: "green silk saree, jasmine flowers".
- Place: "at a temple entrance", "on the beach", "in a home courtyard".
- Light and mood: "golden hour light", "soft and warm", "festive".
- Style: "realistic photo", "watercolor painting", "3D cartoon".
Join them in one sentence with commas.
A realistic portrait of a young woman in a green silk saree with jasmine flowers, standing at a temple entrance, golden hour light, warm festive mood, high detail.
Useful words to keep handy
- Light: soft light, golden hour, studio light, candle light.
- Angle: close-up, full body, from the side.
- Quality: high detail, sharp focus, natural skin texture.
- Style: cinematic, oil painting, pencil sketch, anime, minimal.
What to avoid
Say what you want rather than what you do not want. "An empty street" often works better than "no crowd". Also avoid cramming ten ideas into one prompt, because the tool can get confused.
Improve step by step
When the first image arrives, decide what you dislike. Is the background too dark? Add "brighter background" and try again. If you change only one thing at a time, you will learn what actually helped.
With your own photo
If you upload a photo to be edited, add a clear line such as "keep the person's face exactly the same, change only the clothes". Otherwise the face may change. Use only your own photos.
To get started quickly, our Prompt Builder asks questions in this same structure and assembles the prompt for you.
Practice: from plain to polished
See how each step changes the result in a small example:
- Step 1: "A child" - a generic, unpredictable picture.
- Step 2: "A little girl in a yellow frock" - the clothing is now clear.
- Step 3: "A little girl in a yellow frock, running in a field" - place and action added.
- Step 4: "A little girl in a yellow frock running in a green paddy field, golden hour light, realistic photo, high detail" - a complete prompt.
Notice that each step adds only one new detail.
Frequently asked questions
How long can a prompt be? One to three sentences are usually enough. If it gets too long, the tool may ignore the words at the end.
Will a Tamil prompt work? Many tools understand Tamil. But English often gives better image quality. Try both and compare.
